Confronting the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs - The Akal Takht
Prakash Singh
Badal has committed the blunder of not only challenging the authority of
the Akal Takht but has also dared to erode its Panthic writ, hitherto fore
never challenged by any Sikh. He has at most turned his back on the
historical fact that the Akali Dal and the SGPC took birth in consequence
of a decision taken at the Akal Takht, on the initiative of Jathedar Teja
Singh Bhuchar of the Akal Takht in a Panthic Convention. Badal dared to
violate an edict issued by the Akal Takht on 31 December 1998 to not to
do anything that would vitiate the atmosphere and would jeopardize the
amicable and well intentioned celebration of the 300th anniversary of the
Khalsa.
Badal defied it
to the extent that he interfered in the normal functioning of the SGPC
and instigated the members of the SGPC led his henchmen to humiliate
Gurcharan Singh Tohra and hound him out of the position of the president
ship the SGPC. Maharaja Ranjit Singh controlled the Akal Takht
and the Harmandir Sahib, but he ever came to the holy places as a humble
Sikh and when ever he violated the code of the Khalsa, the Jathedar; Akali
Phula Singh called him before the Panthic assembly at the Akal Takht.
He begged pardon and accepted the word of the Jathedar as a humble Sikh.
Badal on the other hand has dared to "dismiss" the Jathedar of the Akal
Takht. It is noteworthy that Akal Takht Jathedar Singh Sahib Bhai
Ranjit Singh is a man with an aura of sacrifice round him. He remained
in jail for over 14 years, for having tried to fight against the Nirankaris.
Badal’s blunder is an unpardonable sin against the Khalsa Panth and he
loses all credentials to lead the community.

Shameless govt’s interference in the religious affairs of the Sikhs and
denigrating the Sikh institution
The Sikhs have
been constantly fighting against the Government's interference in the religious
affairs. Master Tara Singh launched a morcha against this.
Earlier, the whole Akali movement was fought on the principle of restoring
the Panthic control over the religious shrines. For the 1st time in history,
Badal has used the government machinery and the articles of The Sikh Gurdwara
Act to crush the power of the Sikh Panth. He appointed his henchmen
on the Gurdwara Judicial Commission, to get the desired verdict. Then used
police to harass the members of the SGPC, lured them with money and positions,
to make them unseat Tohra as President of SGPC and fight against
Jathedar of Akal Takht Singh Sahib Bhai Ranjit Singh.
The present state
of the affairs is that only the writ of Mr. Parkash Singh Badal, the Chief
of Minister of Punjab, runs in the affairs of SGPC and his newly appointed
Jathedar and the President of SGPC. remain his servants and a declaration
to this effect has been made by 'Sarkari Jathedar' Giani Puran Singh himself.
3.
The Khalsa tercentenary used for projecting Parkash Singh Badal himself
and his Government
The anxiety of
the Mr. Badal was to look supreme and project himself as the sole leader
of the Khalsa during the Khalsa tercentenary celebration. For this
purpose, he created the Anandpur Sahib Foundation to upstage the SGPC,
started orchestrating the slogan, that he would create the 8th wonder of
the world at Anandpur Sahib. All his efforts ended in dividing the
Sikh Community. The devotion to the Guru, turned into frustration
and apathy. We were unable to give any slogan or message to the young
people, to return to the fold of Khalsa, look to the Guru not to violate
the sanctity of the Keshas. The event passed of and even the leaders
did not get themselves baptized. A month later, wisdom dawned on
them. How far they have dedicated themselves to the Panth, is known
to Guru only. The Sikh tradition, in the process, got a beating.
Guru Granth Sahib was not the presiding deity at the inaugural session.
Siropas were given to apostates from the holy pulpit of Takht Shri Keshgarh
Sahib. The so called order of the Khalsa was awarded indiscriminately
to those who were even non-believers. People like Principal Satbir
Singh, did not find a place on the list. International writers like
Patwant Singh ignored these awards.
4.
Badal played fraud on the Guru and the Panth
Prakash Singh
Badal has committed a fraud on the people by violating the constitution
of the Akali Dal. He assumed the office of the Akali Dal, when he
himself was not a baptized Sikh. He also appointed such office bearers
who were only power seekers and had no faith in the supremacy of the Khalsa
Panth.
5.
Failure of the Badal Government and financial mess
The government
headed by Prakash Singh Badal has utterly failed to deliver the goods.
he people had high expectations that the government would apply balm on
the wounds of the Sikh youth and will give corruption free and efficient
administration. They also expected that the human rights would not
be violated and the police officers will have to act within the norms of
law. Their extra constitutional powers would be withdrawn.
But nothing of this type has happened. Badal runs the administration
through a coterie of corrupt officials and family members. His political
henchmen have mismanaged finances. The president of the state BJP has levied
serious charges against the government. The promises made by the
centre have proved hollow. |

The appointments
in the government service are being sold. Such is the state of anarchy
in the administration that people have lost all faith in the government
machinery.
6.
Non implementation of election promises and election manifesto
The political
agenda, put forth by the Akali Dal, in the election manifesto has been
folded up. Prakash Singh Badal has never talked about it, since he took
the reins of the government in his hands. He did nothing :-
a) For
pressing the central government to take steps to amend the constitution,
so as to make it federal in the real sense.
b) The
long standing demands of the Punjab for getting Chandigarh, Punjabi speaking
areas from Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, scraping the SYL Canal Project,
have never found mention before the central Govt. or even in the statements
of Badal.
c) The
Udham Singh Nagar issue was badly handled and Badal seemed to have cheated
the Sikhs of Terai.
d) Nothing
has been done to punish the oppressive police officers. Rather the
government is defending them on the state's cost.
e) The
so-called provision of free electricity has proved to be a trap for the
people. The rise in domestic tariff has neutralized the concession.
The non implication
of the manifesto is a serious charge of which Mr. Prakash Singh Badal Singh
guilty.
7.
Misuse of the party and the office of the Chief Minister by Badal
The working of
the Shiromani Akali Dal has left much to be desired. The question
of Sikh identity has been side-lined by offering offices of the Shiromani
Akali Dal to rich, but apostate people. The accounts of the Shiromani
Akali Dal are in a mess. There is no treasurer of the Akali Dal and
the accounts are not being maintained, in the scheduled bank, nor are being
audited. There is no provision for a Political Affairs Committee,
in the Akali Dal constitution. In fact there is no Akali Dal - it
is only Badal Dal.
8.
Secret pact with Indian Congress
Prakash Singh
Badal maintains close relationship with Indian Congress, at the state and
the central level, through the Kairon family. That is why no inquiry
has been ordered against the corrupt ministers and officers of Beant Singh
government. The Congress is guilty of having insulted the Sikhs and
having violated the sanctity of Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht and there
cannot be any compromise with such a party. Badal’s actions in this
regard are reprehensible.
9.
Failure as party President and frequent violation of the party constitution
(a) As
president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Badal’s actions tended to appropriate
the authority within himself, divide the Akali workers vertically, between
those personally loyal to him and the rest . Such actions disappointed
the dedicated workers of long-standing and they found themselves pushed
to the background. The frustrations among the Akali rank is the result
of these policies of Parkash Singh Badal.
(b) Badal acted
as a dictator of the Shiromani Akali Dal, allowed Punjabi media baron Barjinder
Singh Hamdard to use the party to his best interest. He was made
Rajya Sabha member not as an Akali but as an independent - interestingly,
all the voters were the Akalis. He was made the chairman Anandpur
Sahib Foundation, for which he lacked any religious pretensions.
To fight the Sri Akal Takht Jathedar, he gave unlimited power and patronage
to Barjinder Singh Hamdard.
Badal as president
of Shiromani Akali Dal has encouraged sycophants, and has given bad name
to Akali Dal as a party of self seekers, egoist and corrupt upstarts. Badal
has proved to be a past master in the art of befouling the Sikhs and also
the Punjabi's. He is neither true to the Guru, nor to the Panth.
He wields power not in the name of the Panth or Punjab. He wields
it for his own sake and for the sake of his family. The Panth has
relied for too long on him. |
